Escalating Humanitarian Crisis in Afghanistan: Earthquakes in Herat Exacerbate Urgent Need for International Aid
Herat Province, Afghanistan – The Canadian International Community Association (CICA) is calling for immediate international support in response to the escalating humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, severely intensified by recent devastating earthquakes in the Herat Province.
Devastating Earthquakes in Herat Province
On October 7, 2023, a catastrophic 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck 25 miles west of Herat City. This was followed by several aftershocks affecting Herat, as well as the neighboring provinces of Badghis and Farah. The situation worsened with two more 6.3 magnitude earthquakes by October 15, 2023, adding to the region’s distress.
The earthquakes have resulted in tragic losses:
– Over 1,300 lives lost.
– Approximately 1,853 injured, predominantly women and girls.
– More than 43,000 people affected across eleven villages in Zindajan district.
Amplified by Influx of Afghan Returnees
This natural disaster has compounded the existing humanitarian challenges in Afghanistan, where thousands of Afghan families are returning daily from Pakistan. These returnees, already in need of shelter, health services, and WASH facilities, now face an even more dire situation due to the earthquakes.
Urgent Call for International Aid
The scale of the crisis, exacerbated by the recent earthquakes, has overwhelmed current humanitarian response capacities. CICA urgently calls on the international community for support. Immediate needs include emergency food supplies, healthcare services, shelter for displaced families, and WASH facilities to prevent disease outbreaks.
CICA’s On-Ground Efforts and Global Appeal
CICA is actively working on the ground, providing vital assistance in areas like health, education, and emergency response. However, the scope and scale of the crisis demand a substantial increase in resources and international aid.
“We are witnessing a humanitarian catastrophe unfolding at an unprecedented scale in Afghanistan,” stated Najiullah Ghazawi, Country Director of CICA in Afghanistan. “The devastating earthquakes have compounded the existing challenges faced by the Afghan people, including the thousands of families returning from Pakistan. We urge the global community to provide immediate aid and support in this critical time.”
